Pokémon Red and Blue [1996]

Gen 1 is one I think deserves more credit. Many people are quick to throw it out for it's age, it's glitches, and it's more traditional-JRPG approach to it's game desgign. As for me, I personally love it for those reasons. Gen 1 is not a perfect set of games. They're games made by a small team of passionate people, wanting to create a large and expansive world. And, I think they succeeded. Maybe it's a bit rough, but it's warm, and it's meaningful.

Pokémon Gold and Silver [1999]

Gen 2 feels more like a sequel, rather than a new Pokémon game. Considering it's rushed development history, it practically is a sequel. But, I think that ironically gives Gen 2 a lot of personality. They're games meant to build off of Gen 1, and while it's certainly lacking in some aspects, I'd say it's scope and ambition more than make up for it. Gen 2 is just such a cozy set of games, they always feel so alive, and so warm. I just love how charming these games are.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire [2002]

Gen 3 is honestly quite experimental, by Pokémon standards, having introduced many of the tropes and design quirks that the franchise follows today. It's more removed from the past two sets of games, it's more competitive in approach to combat, and it's Pokémon designs tend to push a lot of boundaries. While I think this experimentation can create problems at times, I do still appreciate Gen 3 for how revolutionary it tries to be, and I love these games regardless.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl [2006]

Gen 4 is a bit of a complicated one to talk about. I dislike it's region design, I find it too slow most of the time, I think the story it introduces is one of the worst in the main series, and I think it's Pokémon designs can get a bit too over-the-top. However, as the series' first set of mainline games in 3D, I still appreciate the different ways it tries to utilize the new technology. Gen 4 are a very focused and immersive set of games, and while they're very flawed, they're still very charming.

Pokémon Black and White [2010]

Gen 5 is where the series peaked, in my opinion. While these games were very polarizing on release, many fans see them as the height of the franchise, myself included. They're full of creativity, passion, and ambition, with the developers clearly trying to steer the series into a more experimental tone once again. The story is more fleshed out, new Pokémon are at the forefront of the maingame, and even the core ideas of Pokémon get challenged by these games. They're games focused on doing things differently, in the most loving way possible, and I adore them for that.

I've always loved the sense of scale and adventure that the first five generations of Pokémon have. They always feel like these immersive worlds that I can just escape into. As JRPGs, they're certainly flawed, but as full-on experiences, they feel so magical, and I love it. It's always so much fun getting to explore a lively region, catch new Pokémon, grow attached to them, and go on a journey with them. Admittedly, I don't really like the direction Pokémon has gone in since Gen 6 onwards, it feels too corporate and sanitized now. I appreciated the 3DS games, but the Switch games have all been extremely disappointing in my opinion. But, I can't say I'm not a Pokémon fan, even still. The feeling of wonder those first five games give me is one that I value, and I don't think I'll ever give up that feeling.
